Moncton (NB), May 20, 2021 - The Assumption Gallery is pleased to present the photographs of artist Rebecca Belliveau  during the months of May and June 2021. The exhibition entitled "NYC: Blue-Gray" will allow people to travel to New York City for a moment to discover surreal urban scenes through reflections in windows.
"The idea is to bring the reflection of the window with what is in the window and merge the two, which creates a world, an effect, a landscape in itself that is completely different," explains the photographer who wandered the American city in 2014.
She says this technique of superimposing the scene with its off-camera reflection marries these two opposing perspectives to create a new view of the setting. Each photo was then printed on watercolour paper in a monochromatic blue-gray that recalls the grayness of metropolitan cities around the world.
The artist invites people to discover this poetic world with her work, such as the photo entitled "Lamppost in Bloom". The huge flowers in the window seem to emerge from the storefront to adorn the lamppost at the corner of Bleecker and Grove streets, creating an unexpected botanical garden.
Rebecca Belliveau hopes that this fusion of images and reflections will provoke thought and draw people into an imaginary world, much like Alice chasing the white rabbit in Wonderland. "It's also to show a little bit of how we put together what is true and what is not to form our reality. Our thoughts and our physical reality are put together in our heads," she says.
A visual arts graduate from the Université de Moncton, Rebecca Belliveau continued her training in contemporary art at Concordia University in Montreal. She specializes in painting and photography.
Assumption Gallery exhibits contemporary, modern, folk and historical art, as well as sculpture and photography by professional Canadian artists. Six exhibitions, each lasting two months, are presented each year. It is located at 770 Main Street, Moncton, on the first floor of Assumption Place.
